Gerry Hanan interviewed by GSD&M Idea City for their Profiles in Creativity video series for Fashion Week.

I just completed a video interview with GSD&M, the largest ad agency in Austin Texas. GSD&M Idea City is an advertising agency that has helped grow some of the world’s most successful brands. (NYSE: OMC) and their client list includes PGA Tour, BMW, US Air Force, American Red Cross, John Deere, Hallmark and AT&T.

On August 14th, GSD&M Idea City will host 2010 Fashion Week kick off event with the “Bright Lights, Idea City” event at the GSD&M location.

As part of GSD&M’s tradition of ”supporting the creative culture” this web series highlights the careers of 5 artists and their connection with creativity in Austin, and was created to build buzz about Launch787’s Austin Fashion Week. The creative professionals selected for this series were makeup artist Maris Malone Caldron, Ilios Lighting owner Brian Azar, sound engineer Richard Belisle and fashion photographer Gerry Hanan.

Duff Stewart, president and CEO of GSD&M Idea City said “We are proud to be part of this year’s Fashion Week events and to recognize these individuals for their impact on Austin as a city of ideas.”

“For the casting, we sought out people who represent unique roles when it came to the Bright Lights, Idea City event – from presenters to the experts working behind the scenes,” said Melanie Mahaffey, senior manager of media relations for GSD&M Idea City in an e-mail. “Our goal with the profile series is to not only highlight but recognize these people for their hard work and influence on Austin’s creative scene.”

Today, August 9th saw the launch of the first interview with Currie Bucher, Touch of Sass boutique owner. Over the remainder of this week, one new video will be released & the interview with me will go live on GSD&M’s Youtube channel on Friday the 13th.

Communication Arts Magazine 51st Annual Photography competition winner and published in the July / August photo annual issue

Earlier this year I entered a photography competition for the first time. It is in a magazine called Communication Arts, and this is their 51st annual photography competition. The magazine, often seen lying around in studios, is heralded as the most influential publication for art directors and creative directors and has world-wide distribution.

I was incredibly excited and honored when I got the email a few weeks back announcing that I was selected as one of the winners in the unpublished category of the 2010 competition. A copy of the magazine containing my winning image arrived at my house while I was at work in the studio so my entire family got to see it before I did I asked my daughter, who had just returned from her first gig as a shooter at a wedding to take a shot of me with the magazine.

My photograph was printed on page 192 of their just released, July / August issue, and it was selected along with the other winners out of a total 13,000 photographs from 6,075 entries. The editorial staff at Communication Arts citing the full impact of the recession, observed a significant drop in entries to this year’s Photography Annual, which in the past, has had as many as 40,000 photographs submitted from all over the world.

My winning photograph was entitled “Fragile – An essay to portray a vulnerable soul”. The model in this photograph is a wonderful lady from Senegal, who was studying in College Station at the time I had the opportunity to work with her.

Normally, I dislike being shot . . .

But this time I really liked it

I was assisting Dell senior photographer, Brian Kuntz, on a shoot, doing corporate profile shots in the Executive Briefing Center, and we were setting up the lighting for a shot after lunch. Once the location was to Brians liking, I was the stand-in model (to enable Bryan to shoot and make sure the lighting was to his liking before the real subject arrived).

For this shoot, Bryan was shooting with the Canon 1DS Mark II, which was tethered to his Dell Precision Notebook.

Because he was tethered, I was able to see the images appear on the notebook screen as he took them, and when I saw this one, I actually liked it enough to get a copy for myself. It’s a little uncommon for me to get a shot of myself that I like.
